    Attended Glenville State College and taught at the King Knob, Lamb's Run, Macfarlan and Beechwold schools. A prominent Harrisville businesswoman, she operated the Whitehall Hotel for 34 years and the B&B Rexall Drug Store for 15 years. She was active in the Republican Party in West Virginia, receiving an invitation to the inauguration of President Richard Nixon in 1973. She was a contributor to the society column of the Ritchie Gazette newspaper.

She also organized the first two Girl Scout troops in Ritchie County, one in Smithville and the other in Harrisville. Upon obtaining her college degree in 1941, "she taught her first two years in one-room schools in Ritchie County, where she could walk home for the weekends. Then in 1943, Edith took a position teaching first grade in Harrisville, where she taught for 17 years. She and [husband] Wilson came to Ohio in 1960 where she continued teaching in Tuscarawas and Stark counties."

    Notes:

    While working at the Whitehall Hotel in Harrisville as a young woman, Avalene was well known for her baking skills. As described by her stepmother, Edna Carpenter Reeves in Goldenseal Magazine, Winter 1999: "Avalene always was so great to bake, and she baked the best butterscotch pies. She was making the filling for these butterscotch pies in a great big skillet, and she reached around to get her vanilla, and she poured in how much vanilla she wanted in her butterscotch pie. But somebody had set a bottle of shampoo there, and she put shampoo in. It just started raising up. That stuff foamed all over that hot plate, all over the floor. It was boiling butterscotch and that shampoo in it. You never seen such a mess in all your life."
