    The following is from a handwritten letter by Frank DeForest Gaston (1853-1920) of Meadville, PA: "A reunion of the Gaston family was recently held at Centralia, Ill at which over 1,000 persons were present, the entire connection numbering over 1300. All were descendants of Wm Gaston who came to Ill in 1827..." "Wm Gaston was born in North Carolina..." (But DAR Lineage Book has birth in Lancaster Co, PA.)

    Birth:
    Hanna's "Ohio Valley Genealogies," p. 41, reports birth date as Jul 23 1755. Jane Farrell Burgess, in "The Gaston Genealogy," pp. 87 & 96, provides conflicting birth dates of 1755 and Jul 10 1757. Bill Gaston, http://home.mindspring.com/~bgaston2/, reports birth date as Jan 13 1761. Age 82y 6m 2d on headstone calculates to a birth date of July 10 1855. But William Gaston's birth date accepted by the DAR is July 10 1757.

    Never married, William Porter Gaston was highly self-educated in math, English and history, and he carried a dictionary with him that he studied as he rode along on his horse. A highly religious man, he studied the Bible during much of his free time. He was missing his two front upper teeth, and the story goes that he lost them when someone dared him to sneak up to a large boar hog and bite its tail. He took the dare, and as the hog jumped, Porter lost his teeth.
