    Notes:

    In May 1846 in Columbiana County, Ohio, James Estep Gaston became the legal guardian of Mary Gaston. Wording of the guardianship papers implied that she was not an orphan. Her natural parents were not listed in court documents. Analysis of census data indicates the likelihood that Mary's natural parents were James' younger brother Robert and his first wife Lydia Soule.
