    Ed Kimball battled alcoholism for a number of years and nearly lost himself, and his family, along the way. But he had just recently celebrated over fifty years of sobriety, and gave back so much to so many along the way during his sobriety. He was vitally interested in helping people who were affected with substance abuse problems. He initiated several Alcoholic Anonymous Groups in the Parkersburg area in the 1960’s, and in 1968, accepted a position with the Center for Alcohol and Drug Abuse. He was responsible for leading group therapy sessions at the Spencer State Hospital. In 1972, he accepted a position with the WV Dept. of Mental Health. In this role, he focused on helping private industries identify addictive employees. In 1974, he developed for Kaiser Aluminum, one of the first national comprehensive programs that focused on helped employees turn their lives around and saved their job. During this same period, he led therapy groups at the Ripley Hospital and in Ironton, Ohio. He was the Exec. Director of Valley Clinic, a specialized treatment center for alcohol withdrawal, in St. Albans, W Va. from 1975 to 1980, and later directed a center in Ironton, Ohio.

    He accepted a position with CSX Transportation in 1983 and proposed a program which drastically changed the Century rules regarding alcohol and drug use among employees responsible for running trains. Under this new program, which was implemented in 1985, employees became responsible for keeping any drugs or alcoholic drinks off the property. To date, CSX hasn’t had any rail accidents caused by employee use of alcohol and drugs. One of his good friends and former VP at CSX said, "I'll bet he saved well over a thousand lives and probably just as many marriages over the years." It truly is hard to know just how many lives he touched.
