Adam Hickman served in the Revolution under Captains Nagle and Neal, Virginia Services No. 8278, enlisting in Berks County, PA in 1775. Adam and Marcy Pickering Hickman had a total of five daughters and one son.

Notes:

David Hickman (1793-1863) went to Norfolk with the militia under the call of the Governor of Virginia to resist a threatened invasion in 1812 by the British Army; but they met their fate at New Orleans where they ran against General Jackson and the Kentucky riflemen. After being a clerk of the courts, he was appointed Clerk of the Superior Court of Law and Chancery for Tyler Co on its organization. He held that post till the day of his death, having served forty years.

Notes:

Francis Delong Hickman was appointed Clerk of the Circuit and County Courts of Doddridge County and held both offices for fourteen years. He was Clerk of the Board of Supervisors for five years and then became Commissioner of Accounts. He was one of the original settlers of the county and assisted in making the original survey of West Union. He was a merchant in the area for many years and Editor of the Herald, one of the first newspapers of the county. ["The History of Doddridge County, WV" p. 167] Headstone has his name spelled "Frances," but Francis is the spelling found elsewhere, including the name of his grandson, Francis Grover Hickman.

She was active as a newspaper reporter for the Clarksburg Exponent, West Union Record, West Union Herald, and contributed to the Associated Press and United Press International until after her 78th birthday. She also worked for the Gallup Poll. For ten years, she donated her services to the Red Cross, serving as chairman of Doddridge County and later as home service chairman. Much of this was during World War II. She also compiled the history of Doddridge County for the local newspapers.

Obituary gives birth as Jul 23 1894, with age at death in Feb 1976 as 81, which would seem to be correct. But SSDI and Doddridge Co History Book give birth as Jul 23 1895, as does his birth record.

The Feb 1976 obituary of Leland Morris Hickman stated that he was predeceased by a brother David. This is the only reference we have found to a child of this name in this family. He does not appear in any census and he was not included in the children of Thomas Hickman and Annie Riley "who grew to adulthood, married and had families" as described in "The History of Doddridge County," p. 167.

Circumstantially, the following Doddridge County birth record, Page 89, Line 952, is likely to pertain to this child:

Also circumstantially, the following news article is likely to pertain to this child:
Local news item, "West Union Record," Friday, Mar 16 1900, in its entirety:
"The infant child of Thomas Hickman and wife of this town died last Sunday morning and was buried in the town cemetery Monday morning."

The "town cemetery" undoubtedly refers to the one located at Blockhouse Hill, but it is not clear which of the three sections, the IOOF, the SDB or the Catholic. The IOOF section, where the child's parents were buried many years later, had its first burial in 1899. Because his parents are known to be buried there we also report burial there, but it is equally possible that he was buried in what we now refer to as the SDB section, more established section at the time.

Although in modern terms, a two-year-old child would not be considered an infant, we assume that the 1900 news article refers to the same child born in 1897. As of tthe 1900 Census, enumerated in June, the child's mother was reported to have five living children (all of whom we have accounted for, none born in 1897) and two deceased children. Clearly the child born in 1897 and the one who died in 1900 are included in this count, but it is not clear if they are the same or two different children. For the sake of simplicity, we present them as one and assign the name David as indicated. This may require some modification if and when additional information comes to light.

Born and raised in West Union, WV, she spent most of her married life in Pittsburgh, PA, where she retired in 1975 as a secretary for the Pittsburgh Police Department. She was a graduate in 1919 of West Union High School, and in 1920 of Mountain State Business College. As of her 100th birthday in June 2001, she was a resident of Sharpsburg, PA, and was a resident of Pittsburgh at the time of her death in 2003.
