(17) Death Record - Birth date calculated from age at death. (18) Doddridge County Death Records, West Union, WV. Event Notes Note (1) Although the death date on his flat grave marker is 1863, and the death date on the monument shared with his wife is Dec 27 1863, it appears that his actual death date was in December 1862. His will, written on March 8 1862, was submitted for probate on January 26 1863, referring to him as "Ralph Smith, deceased." His will indicates that he was predeceased by children Elizabeth and John. (Doddridge County Will Book 1, page 43) The type and condition of Ralph Smith's gravestones indicate that they were probably placed long after his death. Local death records during the Civil War period are sparse, and we have not found one for him. Note (2) Identified as mother-in-law Mahalia Kinney, 71, divorced, in household of former son-in-law Samuel Halman and his second wife, Atha. Note (3) Age 81y 2m 19d in death record calculates to a birth date of Oct-29-1838. But birth date on headstone is 1841. She was age 9 in the 1850 Census.
