Death record reports immediate cause of death as "Fall from Rail Road Bridge" which was characterized as an accident. An article in the Mar 28 2006 issue of the West Union Herald quotes the 1944 newspaper account of the accident as follows: "Alfred Oren [sic] Scott, 63, of West Union, until recently town pumper here, was found dead with a badly crushed skull and a fractured leg shortly after 10:30 p.m. Friday night, 2 June 1944, under the Middle Island railroad bridge. Apparently he had jumped from the railroad trestle twenty-four feet above to avoid a passing train, or he had been knocked from the bridge, or had slipped or stumbled and while trying to regain his footing fell off the bridge. There was a violent rain and electric storm at the time. Scott was lying on the pavement of the highway about twenty feet from the end of the trestle. A westbound train passed through West Union shortly before Scott's body was found."
