Davis enlisted in Company A, 14th W.Va. Infantry, in West Union on Aug 14 1862. He mustered in on active duty at Wheeling on Aug 23 1862. In October 1862, he was home sick on furlough in Doddridge County. On April 25 1863, he was shot in the abdomen at the Battle of Greenland Gap. The bullet penetrated his bowels, and he died of wounds the next day. Note (2) Birth date on headstone is Sep 17 1836, but 1900 Census shows birth date as Sep 1838. Note (3) "Davis - The Settlers of Salem WV" reports birth date as Feb 12 1842 on p. 68, but Feb 22 1842 on p. 129. Note (4) His military records show provide the following details of his service: He enrolled 28 July 1862 in West Union for 3 years, and he mustered in as a Private 23 Aug 1862 at Wheeling. He served in Co A, 14th W.Va. Inf, under Jacob Smith. He was captured by Rebels on 25 Apr 1863. He died on 17 Apr 1864 in Webster, Taylor County, WV of an injury sustained by an axe wound to the leg (near the shin) while building a shelter on 13 Apr 1864 while in the service of the United States Military. His wife received a widow's pension and his son, Waitman T Willey Davis, received a minor's pension after his mother remarried. Eastburn Davis was born on Trough Fork on Middle Island Creek, and his wife was born on Buckeye Fork of Middle Island Creek. Their son Waitman T. Willey Davis was certified as being born 9 Nov 1862 by himself, his mother and various other testators, including T.K. Knight and C.J. Stuart. (This birth date varies from the 9 Dec 1863 birth date reported in "Davis - The Settlers of Salem WV," p. 129.)
