He marched from Grafton to Port Republic, where he first smelled powder and made his first retreat. Hh was in the battles of Port Republic, Cedar Mountain, second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and at the surrender at Appomattox. He received from the government a medal bearing date '1861,' and a shield, and the names of his engagements, for bravery on the field. He was detailed to work in the 'pioneer corps,' and was the only member who escaped imprisonment a the hands of the enemy.
