Event Notes
Note (1) Birth date on headstone is 1847, his birth date is Feb 1847 in the 1900
Census, and a birth date of Feb 20 1847 has been widely reported. Age 18 at the
time of his July 1863 military enlistment would put his birth in about 1845,
But the 1880 Census puts his birth in about 1849, while the 1850 Census puts it
in about 1848. The latter appears to be the more accurate, based on ages of his
closest siblings.
Note (2) Death date given in obituary as Wednesday, Apr 26 1916, but death record
states Apr 27 1916.
Note (3) Military records show that Richard Ford enlisted in Co H, 4th W.Va. Cavalry,
on 30 July 1863 in West Union. Although his birth date per se is not specified
in his military record, age 18 at the time of his enlistment would put his birth
in about 1845, at variance with other records. He mustered in as a Private on
29 Aug 1863 in Parkersburg, His record contains scant information regarding his
duties. In Dec 1863 he was on duty driving team for the regiment, and in Jan
1864 he was on duty as wagoner for the regiment. He mustered out with his
company as a Private on 8 Mar 1864 in Wheeling.
Note (4) Age in 1850 & 1860 censuses puts birth in about 1840, age in marriage record
puts it in about 1844, and age in 1880 Census puts it in about 1842. But birth
date on headstone is 1839, while death record shows it as Aug 20 1838.
Note (5) Age 64y 8m 24d in death record would put birth at Mar 10 1876. But 1900
Census gives birth date as Feb 1878, while obituary states Feb 28 1877 and date
on headstone is 1877. Her birth record, however, states that she was born on
Feb 28 1878. She was age 2 in the 1880 Census.
