Event Notes
Note (1) Date on headstone is Dec 14 1906, but death record states Dec 13 1906.  A
report of his death occurring in Moundsville was almost certainly a result of
confusing that city name with Morgansville, the community in Doddridge County
where he lived.
Note (2) Zachariah Offutt's headstone contains no military information.  But his entry
in "Doddridge County Cemeteries, Vol. II," p. 8, includes the following: 
"Military Information.  Offnutt [sic], Col. Zachariah.  Married Harriet Neely on
25 November 1855.  WUR [West Union Record] 21 December 1906.  Reprint WUR 16
December 1937.  Page 4.  Also WVHE [West Virginia Heritage Encyclopedia], Page
47."  We have been unable to find any primary source, to include Civil War
records on file at the U.S. National Archives (www.fold3.com), to confirm that
Zachariah Offutt had any military service.
