It reads, in part, "I hereby certify that I joined together ... Mr. Hugh Gaston and Miss Elizabeth Washburn on the first day of June 1848 ... agreeably to a license issued from the clerk's office of Lewis county court. Event Notes Note (1) Birth date calculated from age at death, 100y 1m 21d, stated in death record. This varies by one day from the age stated in his obituary, 100y 1m 20d. Note (2) Although her death record gives her birth place as Kentucky, the censuses of 1860, 1870 and 1880 all show it as Virginia. Note (3) Age 96y 5m 28d, stated in death record and on headstone, would put birth date at Jun 4 1852. But death certificate specifies birth date as Jun 7 1852. His death certificate also identifies his mother not as his father's second wife Elizabeth, but as Amanda Washburn, Elizabeth's daughter from a previous marriage to Isaac Washburn. This is consistent with the ages of Elizabeth (51) and Amanda (27) at the time of Marion's birth. Amanda never married, so she presumably remained in the Gaston home. The relationships projected to the public are not known, but since Marion's surname was Gaston, it is assumed that he was raised as the son of Hugh and Elizabeth, with his actual biological mother appearing to others as his stepsister. Stated another way, the Elizabeth Washburn who married Hugh Gaston was born Elizabeth King, she was the widow of Isaac Washburn by whom she had a daughter Amanda, and Marion Gaston, though legally and to all appearances the son of Hugh and Elizabeth, was biologically the son of Hugh and Amanda. Informant for Amanda's death record was listed as her son, not identified by name. Amanda shares a common headstone with her mother Elizabeth and stepfather Hugh.
