She was identified as Nancy "Babe" Lou Haught, b. Jan 19 1884, dau of David M. Haught (age 36) & Mary Watson (age 36), their 7th child. The delayed birth certificate was filed by her sister Rosa Haught Thomas on Jun 30 1944. Surviving family members recalled that she rarely if ever used the middle name Lou, typically giving her full married name as Nancy B. Brown or Nancy Babe Brown. Informant for birth record: Dr. E. R. Martin. NOTE: This birth record contains several inaccuracies, not the least of which is the child's name. Clella Margaret Haught was born out of wedlock to Nancy "Babe" Haught. Nancy was never married to Felix Prunty and never went by the Prunty name. Similarly, Clella was known from birth until her marriage only as Clella Haught. The source of the error was apparently the attending physician, who was informed of the child's paternity and, making logical but incorrect assumptions, provided the County Clerk with the above information. Clella was raised fatherless by Nancy Haught until Nancy's 1910 marriage to Addison A. Brown. Other than having a different last name, Clella was just another one of the family when Nancy and Addison's children came along in the ensuing years. Not being aware of this birth record, family members many years later repeated family tradition which misidentified Clella's biological father as Sylvester Orval Prunty (1878-1956), son of Marshall Neal Prunty and Flora Odell Lawson. However, Clella's marriage record identifies her as Clella M. Haught, daughter of "F. O. Prunty and A. A. (Haught) Brown." It was long thought that "F. O." was an error that should have been "S. O." But information provided in 2010 by a Prunty family member revealed the existence of old family letters clearly showing that Clella's father was not Sylvester O. Prunty, but rather his brother Felix O. Prunty (1883-1967), as indicated in Clella's birth record. Apparently out of shame when he learned of Nancy's pregnancy, Felix had left the Doddridge/Ritchie area in 1904 shortly before Clella's birth, returned in 1907 long enough to marry Ada Knight, then moved permanently to Oklahoma. There is no evidence that Felix had any further relationship with Nancy or with Clella. This account of Clella's paternity and Haught surname was written by her nephew. Aunt Clella was a wonderful woman who endured many hardships in her life and, as a single mother, raised two equally wonderful and accomplished children.
