Event Notes Note (1) SAR entry indicates Neelytown as being located in Ulster County, New York. Note (2) John Neely Jr. enlisted from New York City as a militiaman under Capt Tilford in 1776, helped build Fort Montgomery, and was discharged in November 1776. He reenlisted in March 1777 under Capt Feltner and was discharged in October 1777. He reenlisted in 1778 and helped build a fort at West Point, after which he was ordered to the frontier and served until December 25, 1779. After discharge, he moved to Uniontown, Pennsylvania, and later to Virginia. Part of the time of his service was as a volunteer, and part was as a substitute for his father, John Neely Sr. Born in Neelytown, New York, he was one of three brothers. On Oct 29 1845, Margaret Neely (possibly his second wife) deposed that she was the widow of John Neely, a Revolutionary solder and pensioner. Her claim was allowed and a pension was granted to her. The grave of John Neely, at Broad Run Baptist Cemetery in Lewis County, West Virginia, has a plaque describing his Revolutionary War service, placed there by the DAR. Note (3) In household of son Joseph. Note (4) "Davis - The Settlers of Salem WV," p. 20, reports burial in "pioneer Cem., at West Union, WV." "West Union WV Cemeteries (Doddridge County)," p. 40, reports Thomas Nelly's [sic] headstone (dates unreadable) at Blockhouse Hill Cemetery. Based on its placement in the latter publication, the grave's location appears to be at the lower end of the cemetery, near the old Seventh Day Baptist section.Name Index
