Event Notes
Note (1) Age in 1860 Census would put birth in about 1807, while age in 1850 Census
puts it in about 1809.  But age 53y 4m 15d in military burial records calculate
to a birth date of Feb 18 1810.

Note (5) Suffering from consumption.  Father born in Maryland, mother in
Pennsylvania.

Note (7) Age 26y 1m 26d in death record puts birth date at Jan-18-1839.  But the age
on his headstone is 26y 1m 21d, putting his birth date at Jan-23-1839.
Note (8) Military records show that William R. Towner enlisted in 1861 in Company E,
6th (W)Va. Infantry.  He was captured by the Rebels at Bridgeport on April 30,
1863, probably as part of the Jones-Imboden Raid through northwestern Virgina,
He was held prisoner, but was eventually paroled.  He returned to duty on
October 3, 1863. It was during his period of captivity that his father was
killed at Beverly. There's no way to know when he learned of his father's death,
possibly not until he was released months later.  William R. Towner was sick in
hospital from February 1864 until October 6, 1864 when he was discharged upon
expiration of his service obligation. He returned home to Doddridge County,
where he died on March 16, 1865. His cause of death was listed as starvation,
which may have referred to the effects of some underlying medical condition,
perhaps related to his prior hospitalization.
Note (9) Age 17 in 1860 Census would put birth in about 1843.  But age 9 in 1850
Census puts it in about 1841, and age at death calculates to Mar 10 1841.
Note (10) From the military records of Minor Pomroy Towner:  On June 2 1863, he was
sent to the Smithton NWVRR to build blockhouse, where he has been doing guard
duty since.
Note (11) Birth date given as July 7 1854 in the military records of his father, as
July 1855 in the 1900 Census, as 1856 on his headstone, and as July 7 1856 in
his death record..  He was age 4 in the 1860 Census and age 14 in 1870.
Note (12) Listed as A. Ervin Towner, 44, b. Jul 1855, divorced, occupation (blank), in
household of brother George and his family.
Note (13) Age 30 in 1892 marriage record would put birth in about 1862, but age 52 in
1910 Census puts it in about 1858, while the 1900 Census shows birth date as mar
1859.  Date on headstone is Mar 24 1858.
