But the following newspaper account of his death states that he died on Aug 18 1858. "Wheeling (W.Va.) Daily Intelligencer," Thursday, Sep 2 1858, in its entirety: "SUDDEN DEATH -- We learn that Mr. Daniel Underwood, of Tyler county, was killed by the falling of a tree, on the 18th inst. The tree struck him on the right side of the head, mashing the skull. The accident occurred about 3 o'clock in the afternoon, and he was not found till nine in the evening. He was then insensible, and never spoke afterwards. He leaves a wife and one child."
