Event Notes Note (1) Military records show that on 31 May 1861, Evan Alltop enlisted in Co D, 31st Virginia Infantry, in Gilmer County. On 31 Jul 1861, he deserted at Cheat Mountain on Gen. Garnett's retreat from Laurel Hill. There is then a two-year gap in the records. On 20 Mar 1863, he enlisted as a 4th Sgt in Co. A, 19th Va. Infantry, at Frankfort (no state). On 13 Nov 1863, he was captured at Bull Town, Va., by Capt. Harrison on charges of desertion. He entered Camp Case, Ohio, on 2 Dec 1863. He turned himself in at Clarksburg on 29 Feb 1864 and was sent to Fort Delaware because he violated the Oath of Allegiance. He entered Fort Delaware on 4 Mar 1864, and was released on 19 Jun 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance.
