Event Notes Note (1) In household of daughter & son-in-law Rebecca & Israel Duckworth. Note (2) William P. Green enlisted as a First Sergeant in Co A, 14th W.Va. Infantry, on Aug 14 1862 in West Union, Doddridge County. He was promoted to Sergeant Major in January 1863 at New Creek, Mineral County. He was again promoted to Second Lieutenant, assuming command on Apr 1 1863. He was wounded in action at Fisher Hill on Sep 22 1864 and was hospitalized in Winchester until his death. (The Battle of Fisher's Hill was fought September 21-22, 1864, near Strasburg, Shenandoah County, Virginia, as part of the Valley Campaigns of 1864 during the Civil War, resulting in a Union victory. - Wikipedia) The West Union chapter of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) was the William P. Green chapter, named in his honor. NOTE: The state-issued Civil War medal intended for William P. Green was never claimed and remains in storage at the West Virginia State Archives in Charleston.
