Donnelly's "Wests of Duck Creek" (p. 419) reports marriage date as Sep 1 1900, citing D. R. Davisson papers. Event Notes Note (1) Birth date given in obituary as Jun 9 1843, age 94. But date on headstone is 1842. Age 34 in 1880 Census would put birth in about 1846. Note (2) His obituary stated that "temporary burial was in the mausoleum of the Elkview Cemetery in Clarksburg." His headstone, shared with his wife, is at Big Isaac Cemetery. Note (3) According to his obituary, Joseph Napoleon Gulley was the "last Confederate soldier living in Doddridge County and one of the few remaining in West Virginia." His obituary further states: "As a youngster, Gulley enlisted in April 1862 at Buckhannon, as a private in Company E, Twentieth Confederate Cavalry, a part of Jackson's brigade and Ewell's corps. Later he became a sergeant. He fought with the Confederates throughout the war, participating in many encounters in the Valley of Virginia, including those of Cedar Creek, a prelude to the second battle of Bull Run; the capture of Harper's Ferry, and the battle of Sharpsburg or Antietam. Gulley at his death still carried the scars of wounds suffered at the battle of New Market and in a skirmish at Huntersville, near Elkins." Note (4) Marriage record puts it in about 1869 in Harrison Co, but son's birth record in about 1871 in Doddridge Co. He was age 9 in the 1880 Census.
