(24) 1880 Census, Ritchie County, WV (Union District) Event Notes Note (1) According to multiple records, including his wife's widow's pension application, Sylvester Hughes was an unassigned West Virginia volunteer. He was drafted and volunteered as a Private on Sep 21 1864. He was sent to Wheeling to await further assignment. However, he immediately contracted smallpox and was released on Oct 26 1864. He died the following month. John LaForge F. Randolph was a physician and surgeon who attended Sylvester when he was released and sent home. Sylvester Hughes' smallpox caused not only his own death, but also led to the deaths of his father and two of his children. Note (2) Birth date given in "Davis - The Settlers of Salem WV," p. 57, as Dec 1829. But 1900 Census shows it as Jan 1831, and age 41 in 1872 marriage record would also put it in 1831. Age 54 in 1893 marriage record is clearly incorrect. Note (3) Almina's birth date is reported in "Davis - The Settlers of Salem WV," p. 103, as Sep 20 1852, which conforms to her mother's statement in her Civil War widow's pension application. The 1900 Census shows it as Mar 1853. Note (4) Laverney Jane Hughes was born on Dec 31 1856, according to testimony provided by her mother in her Civil War widow's pension application. But her birth date was given in the 1900 Census as Jan 1858, while her death record states Dec 21 1857. Death record also gives birthplace as Greenbrier, W.Va., presumably referring to Greenbrier District in Doddridge County rather than Greenbrier County. Note (5) Death records of both John Randolph Hughes and his wife Victoria incorrectly state burial at Copen Cemetery in Harrison County. Their grave markers are located in Coplin Church Cemetery, near Jarvisville. Copen is in Braxton County. Name Index
