Note (2) Military records show that Joseph Stout enlisted in Co A, 14th W.Va. Infantry, on 27 Feb 1864 at Clarksburg. He mustered in as a Private on 3 Mar 1864 at Wheeling. In Aug 1864 he was on detached service at Charleston, W. Va, and in Sep 1864 he was on detached service at Winchester, Va. He mustered out as a Private on 27 Jun 1865 at Cumberland, Maryland. Note (3) Birth date given in 1900 Census as Oct 1852, age 47, but age 50 in 1910 Census would put birth in about 1860, while age at time of 1977 marriage would put birth in about 1856. But WV Births Index shows her birth date as Apr 3 1858, while her death record shows it as Mar 21 1851. Note (4) Birth date given in death record as Apr 11 1860, and the 1900 Cenus also shows it as Apr 1860. But age 8 in the 1870 Census puts it in about 1862. Note (5) Birth date on headstone is Mar 29 1862. But age 6 in the 1870 Census puts it in about 1864, two years younger than his 8-year-old sister Catharine in that census. Note (6) He was previously married & widowed. Note (7) Birth date on headstone is 1863.
