(22) Ritchie County WV Deaths 1918-1940, Wes Cochran, 2515 10th Ave, Parkersburg, WV 26101 (Nov 1998) Event Notes Note (1) Military records show that Martin Overfield joined for duty on Sep 2 1861 in Harrisville, Ritchie County, for a 3-year period. His stated age at that time was 45. He mustered in on Sep 4 1861 at Webbs Mill, Ritchie County, as a Wagoner in Co E, 6th W.Va. Infantry. Wagoners were principally responsible for transporting and delivering supplies and for caring for the horses that pulled the wagons, but Martin Overfield's duties apparently went beyond that. In March and April 1862, he was at the bridge near Toll Gate Station on detached guard duty. In Sep and Oct 1862, he was "with Corp. Prunty." Muster rolls for Jan/Feb 1863 state that he was "absent without leave since 23 Feb 1863," but another report states that he was absent in Feb 1863 to attend the funeral of his son in Smithton. Muster rolls for May/June 1863 show that he was at Brandygap Tunnel, Northwest Virginia Railroad, building a blockhouse. He was discharged on Sep 10 1864 at Wheeling by expiration of term. Note (2) Enlisted as a Private in Co M, 6th W.Va. Inf, on Oct 20 1861 in West Union. Mustered in at West Union on Dec 26 1861. According to company muster rolls, in Jan/Feb 1862 and April to Aug 1862, he was a guard at No. 5 tunnel and bridges of the Northwest Virginia Railroad. His duty remained in the same area until January 1863. He died of typhoid fever/pneumonia at his home in Smithton (Smithburg) on Feb 18 1863. Note (3) William J. Overfield joined for duty Sep 2 1861 in Pennsboro, Ritchie County, and mustered in as a Private on Sep 4 1861 at Webbs Mills, Ritchie County, in Co E, 6th W.Va. Infantry. His age at enlistment was given as 18. Company muster roll for Mar/Apr 1862 show that he was near Burnt Bridge near Toll Gate on detached guard duty. The muster roll for May/Jun 1863 states that he was at Brandy Gap Tunnel building a blockhouse. He was discharged in Wheeling on Sep 10 1864 by expiration of service.
