Event Notes
Note (1) He had moved to Doddridge County in 1852, as on April 10th of that year
Daniel Gaston conveyed to him 75 acres of land on a branch of Upper Run in
Doddridge County.
Note (2) Birth date in 1900 Census was Dec 1841, age 58.  Birth dates for other family
members in that census were consistent with other records.  Based on age at
death, birth date would be Jan 1 1842, so his actual birth date is probably Dec
31 1841.  A birth date of Jan 1 1841 has been reported by other researchers.
Note (3) Middle initial on military marker incorrectly given as "L" rather than "S". 
All other information on the marker conforms to that contained in veterans
records pertaining to Joseph S. Britton.
Note (4) A family information survey completed by son John W. Hart in 1931 identified
his mother as Miss Emaline Britton, born Mar 14 1850, died May 18 1890.  Those
dates are at variance with information contained in her marriage and death
records.
Note (5) Wes Cochran's "Doddridge County WV Marriages 1845-1937" gives marriage date
as Oct 30 1867.
Note (6) Death date on headstone is Sep 18 1889, with age 35y 7m 8d, which calculates
to a birth date of Feb-10-1854.  But death record shows death date as Oct 19
1889, with age 35y 9m 19d, which calculates to a birth date of Dec-30-1853. 
Husband's obituary (West Union Record, Aug 20 1931) states that she died on Nov
30 1889, .
