of death given as typhoid fever and hemorrhage of the bowels. Age at death given as 20, which would be incorrect by one
year based on the Apr 12 1880 birthdate on headstone and as indicated in the 1880 and 1900 censuses. Birth record shows
birthdate to have been one year later, on Apr 12 1881, believed to be incorrect. Both Mary J. Britton and her older
sister Martha A. Britton died on the same day, of typhoid fever. DR Bk 1, p.
139.

known on that matter.

members in that census were consistent with other records. Based on age at
death, birth date would be Jan 1 1842, so his actual birth date is probably Dec
31 1841. A birth date of Jan 1 1841 has been reported by other researchers.
Note (2) Middle initial on military marker incorrectly given as "L" rather than "S".
All other information on the marker conforms to that contained in veterans
records pertaining to Joseph S. Britton.
Note (3) Age 72y 3m 6d in death record calculates to a birth date of Sep 9 1843. But
obituary states birth date as Sep 21 1843.
Note (4) Birth date on headstone is Apr 12 1881. But she appeared in the 1880 Census,
enumerated on Jun 10 1880, age 2 months, birth month specified as April. Her
birth date in the 1900 Census was also given as Apr 1880, age 20.
Note (5) Obituary gives burial in Gaston Cemetery. This is probably intended to mean
what is now known as the Gaston-Hart Cemetery, Upper Run, Doddridge Co.
